jellybeans

my mother’s class did a gift exchange with another class during Halloween. presents for presents. and on the day of the exchange,  20 crinkling bags of treats from my mother’s class were presented to their neighboring class. imagine! 20 beaming eyes and thoughts bursting with anticipation on what their fellow friends next door would give to them in return… but…..to much dismay, the other teacher presented, one jar of jellybean for my mother’s whole class to share.  Luckily, with her years of experience, my mom had an emergency stash of treats saved for desperate situations.  Soon enough, tiny hands were each grasping their own share of sweets, enough to make their taste buds sing.

and this is also why I saw this jar of jellybeans on the living room table this winter break.

I dove for it when I saw it, then the 14 year old in me held me back. I looked up, and sheepishly asked mother for permission to eat it. No. she says. ok.  3 hours later, I give another try.  This time my mom asks. “why?”

I don’t know, I always had a fondness for jelly beans. I think they are like a candy cheatsheet…. for indecisive people.  You have 1 bean that represents a whole candy flavor. orange for orange candy, bubblegum for bubble gum, pina colado. popcorn for popcorn. granted the taste of other candies are not completely replicable… but definitely close enough. Think… it takes 7 minutes to finish a strawberry flavored dumdum lollypop, in 7 minutes you can have at least 4 DIFFERENT flavored jelly beans…. it’s like going to the international exhibit in Disneyworld to see the most spectacular landmarks of the world all in ONE day. saving airfare, living cost and most importantly time.

imagine a world without jelly beans. the horror!

and after my explanation. she said ok.

The one where I am all over the place.

I've been sitting here for about ten minutes struggling over what to write. Boston you have sucked the literary muse out of me... or... perhaps it is the guilty conscious lingering over my head counting down the hours until I begin my whirlwind of exams. Two on Tuesday, Two on Wednesday, One on Thursday.

I could riddle off hundreds of reasons why I didn't complete my projected list of studying today, but it can easily be summed up in one sentence. Procrastination got the best of me.... including me presently (hence why I am on this blog).

But that’s okay, I still have 24 hours to prove four months of work. A bit of positivity can hopefully leverage me through tonight... I don't think I'll crash anytime soon as I have stayed up until four for four CONSECUTIVE nights.  (what a mouthful).   Jaw drop.   Anyway here is a little note to myself in the future.

Hi Gina,
I hope you did well on your  exams.
Hope you're happy because I sure am envious of you right now... being able to do whatever you wish.
Pay your January rent.
Love, Gina

And here are some recent food pictures I took while dining at Boston Cafeteria

meh.. I'm going to make some instant noodles.

Keeping my sugars high but guilt low.

School stress, studying, social life and impending deadlines are recipes for breakouts.  Intermix that with my everlasting taste for sweets.   Tis the season.  I'm sad to say my skin has recently been in a somewhat loosing battle.  So I'm starting to take action not just topically, but regulating my intakes as well. Here are a mashup of fast ways I try to curb my sweet tooth with skin health(ier) foods.  I am a extremely lazy person in terms of food preparation. IE. I will refuse to whip up a healthy delicious shake  because I don't want to spend the time taking out the frozen fruit, blending them and then spend 3 minutes cleaning the blender... so terrible.

- Vitamins. vitamin C. gummy vites. I look forward to taking them each day like 'candy', obviously the recommended dosage per day.
- Hot green tea with honey (with lemon?) instead of hot chocolate or coffee.
- Frozen grapes taste like frozen juice pops
- Citrus. This may be biased but I absolutely love oranges and orange juice.  These can curb my juice cravings.
- Thought process on buying that expensive basket of strawberries.   Is 3 dollars worth it?  Now think, are 3 dollars worth of dryers peppermint limited edition ice cream worth it? (AUGHHH MIND DILEMMA) Choose the berries.
- Organic unsweetened apple sauce and sweeten them with honey. Add a dash of cinnamon for extra flavoring.
- Fruit Yogurt on toasted bagels instead of cream cheese or jam.
- Use mint to "freshen" up your drinks instead of relying on carbonation.  ie. Lemons, Mint leaves and Honey makes a delicious cold drink.

Basically, I revolve around fruit and using honey as a sugar substitute. These may or may not be the "right way" persay. But  it keeps my taste buds satisfied and my senses guilt free. I am always down to new ideas so let me know if any of you have skin healthy ways of curbing your sweet tooth as well!

I think I found a solution to satisfy your psychotic sweet cravings...

In an attempt to placate "grossness" of my previous entry.  I've decided to  post a more stomach friendly entry.... featuring none other then the all american friendly... DOUGHNUT!

My trip to Psycho Donuts was a professional whim.  A whim because it was a tack-on to my late night boba run. Professional, because I  yelped the store to make sure it would be a worthwhile visit.

A crazy arse donut shop. period.  (PS. spot the boba?)

Ze Kooky Monster.

Psycho Panda

Strawberry Fields... my favorite! This literally has the most innocent name

"I was still trying to take in the environment when I was greeted enthusiastically by a nurse with yellow (yes, YELLOW) hair. As she smiles, her dimples glisten. (oh wait.. they are actually symmetrical piercings on her cheek). She strikes up a friendly conversation as she hands us some bubble wrap and patiently waits for us to decide what to get."
POP POP POP POP

Our friendly nurse/cashier  has literally orange/yellow hair ...

diagnosis... of each donut.  Do you spot the Michael Jackson?
It's actually chocolate doughnut on the inside. Let's see if you can figure out why. ;)

Indeed my expectations were met if not exceeded.

So...as usual, if you are still curious read my complete yelp review here!

Early Morning Salsa Magic.

Nothing beats being up at 5:30 AM, dicing away...while watching the sunrise through my teary eyes. (onion fume induced). Salsa por mi trabajo's potluck.

Cinco De Mayo  and Spanglish...

for the win.

[later edit]

Presenting the cheerful reminants of my salsa carnage.

...hopefully all digesting now in the happy tummies of little kiddies.

on the topic of children, today in class we had them make cute maracaasss. shake shake shake.

Made with 20% kid innovation, 75% adult aid, and 5% chance. A poor child started crying because all the Thomas stickers were taken.

It's an amazing feeling watching little strudents bob to the hat dance, cheering along with them... all the while worrying in the back of my mind whether these shakers were taped firmly enough.

Luckily, the vacuum continued its indefinite slumber as no rice escaped from their tubular chambers.  After... they made little Mexican flags, played "Simone dice" (toca la cabeza por favor!) and made/tasted mini tacos.  At the end of class, all the five year olds unanimously exclaimed "I LOVE MEXICO!".

This indeed my favorite Cinco de Mayo yet.

A pointless post about fries

Human nature has it so our visuals highly influence our judgement.

BS you say. First impressions aren't everything. Can't our ideals be changed slowly after more interactions (with a person.. persay)??  Maybe, but this usually isn't the case in our relationships.......with food.

If something looks delicious, it most likely will be delectable.

If something looks disgusting.... chances are, it will taste disgusting as well.

For me, I hate soggy fries. It looks unappealing.. and perhaps that's why I think it tastes extremely gross.
Looks soggy.. tastes gross. Nay.

This is a problem.... because sweet potato fries holds a prominent position in my "fave food" lists, yet it also a stubborn bugger to maintain crisp.

Luckily, I had a baking epiphany the other day resulting from an accident.

I forgot to set oven timer, and ended up making my best batch of sweet potato fries yet.

The way to make your potato fries nice and crispy is to simply over-bake it a tad bit. Preheat 450 keep fries at least 0.5 cm apart on pan, and bake for around 18 min. (mainly until smaller pieces are a bit browned at the edges).

Sweet mother look at the grease. yay.
That's it! No need to blanch, soak or do anything else random  that baking sites suggest.

Noms 4 Ur i's

Jukebox: Your Biggest Mistake - Ellie Goulding

cousin comes to visit = foooodd galore!

Salivating yet?

Lack of words due to the fact that a row on my laptop keyboard has decided to go on strike. I have to tediously mouse-click my onscreen keyboard to input any of the following letters: q w e r t y u i o p -___-

qwerty.... you I obviously DON'T prefer. Why must 3 out of the 6 most common letters be on the first row?!

Hopefully I'll figure out what's wrong with my computer soon!

Dance to this Salsa

Jukebox: Friday? haha nahhh. Bit Funk - Love Scientific

Fridays are fun fun fun fun... not just because the Rebecca Black song says so ;)  It's also fun because there are usually delectable homemade treats in the teacher's lounge to celebrate the onset of the weekend.  Last week, one of the staff members made homemade salsa. It was beyond bomb. After inquiring about her recipe, I went ahead (with the help of my mother) to make our own rendition of this healthy bold salsa... perfect for chip dipping or on topping white/brown rice.

Disclaimer: I was never much of an "exquisite" cook. I generally make meals that are thrown together spontaneously with just my favorite ingredients.  Therefore, please excuse the recipe informality :P

Ingredients:
  • Corn
  • Whole tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Cilantro
  • Black Eyed Beans.... (I almost wrote peas lol)
  • Lemon
  • Green Chili
  • Vinaigrette Sauce!!!!
Easy Peasy Obvious Steps:

Dice the tomatoes, onions, cilantro and green chili. Drain the beans first with water (if they are canned so there's no icky paste). Toss everything in a big bowl. Squeeze lemon over the whole batch, mix in the Vinaigrette Sauce as you mix everything equally.

Serve immediately :D

I'm not much of a measuring-cup girl. Therefore, the geener measuring method will have to suffice. Basically it goes like this: put more of what you like to eat in the mixing batch. Put only a small amount of the ingredients that you don't like as much.

I think you can figure out what's my favorite place to buy groceries :P And yes those lemons were bought there as well.

'we we we so excited' ... tadah! enjoy!

Food Fun Friends and "F"otography

Jukebox: Lights- The Listening

After weeks of my monotonous work sleep cycle, I had finally two lucky opportunities to hang out!

Cafe Hiro in Cypress CA was our latest destination, smack in the middle of each of our triangular commute. This asian fusion luncheon was set at 12PM, and we all arrived around 12:30. This is how alike we are in practices :)

Welcome to our technology oriented era....

70% of the lunch, I made conversation with their cellphones not faces...... JKJK :)

Extensive menu of decently priced dishes!

delicious soup. As T & M says: a mixture of miso and curry.

Delicious BBQ Steak Salad. A Bold infusion of flavors.

Playing with the fisheye function. Unfortunately amplifying crappy complexion.

Frozen treats for dessert. Italian ice + vanilla soft serve!

PS.  HAPPY 38 (SAN BA) DAY!!!!

Kettle Me Happy

Jukebox: Annie Waits - Ben Folds

You know those moments when you realize "OH CRAP I'M LATE!", but thankfully whatever you have to do doesn't require much prep beforehand such as:

rushing a package to a post office before it closes,
returning a book to a library on the day it's due,
picking up your sibling from school.....

And in these moments when attire or facade doesn't take precedence.. you take ONLY what you need.

rewind to last night when I suddenly realized I had to pick up my sister.

I grabbed my necessities in a whim and trudged my way to the garage when I heard my mom exclaim behind me."why are you bringing that?"

to my own surprise, I realized that aside from my keys and wallets dangling from my right,

I had conveniently grabbed this in my left hand... arm...

Half Eaten... large sized kettle corn for the WIN :)

goes to show what's a "necessity" in my life.... -__-

On the topic of food... this is my most current discovery/obsession.

Oh Taiwanese Styled Taro Slushi ... where have you been the past two decades of my life?

Taro flavored slushi intermixed with boba, pudding, jellies, small tapiocas.

Believe it or not, I had this for the first time exactly one week ago. Yum.

Congrats for reading this boring post

Horray for leadership in this country! Without president's, I would not be able to stay at home today to relax and pig out.

Speaking of food...

Is it just me or has anyone ever felt foolish reading packagings that say "CONGRATS for choosing this food product" ?    Kind of like the labeling printed on this bag of beef jerky I'm currently eating:

Whenever I see something like this, I feel like I'm suppose to experience some grand sense of accomplishment after I consume it. Unfortunately, my intuitions usually deem false.

Wouldn't be really funny if schools sent acceptance letters printed on products?  Like you would recieve a bag of potato chips from so and so university and probably have an inital reaction of "Wth?!"

Then while perusing through the ingredients on the back you'd spot the label on it...

CONGRATULATION! We are pleased to say you have been accepted to blah blah blah University! Please open this bag of chips to taste your glory.  You will also find more information inside the bag (kind of like those mini coupons and toys you find inside the cereal box).

That would be pretty spiffy eh?

Notes to self: coffee aroma

I was in starbucks for less than 8 minutes to get a Tazo Green tea and a blueberry muffin. Since then, I've been home for more than an hour, yet the subtle aroma of coffee still lingers on my coat.

Either the fabric of my outfit is extremely absorbent, or the smell of starbucks is especially pungent.

Can you say delicious?

mmm... soooo goood =)

The rise and fall of mr. gingerbread man!

My gingerbread man turned out kind of ugly...another childhood dream crossed out :P But it was definitely made with care :) I envy dessert decorators now.

Anyway, I went through a minor dilemma after I finished my masterpiece. I wasn't sure where I should begin eating Mr. GBM as I would feel disrespectful eating any portion. It's the same dilemma I go through when I eat gummy bears or any other food items with actual "bodies". In the end, I followed my mother's advice. And started off with the arms... leaving the smiley face for last.

This sounds soooo wrong. -__-

Empty pockets but no one would care

Jukebox: Throwin' Shapes- Minus the Bear

Don't you just love the days when you can leave the house without anything...

No Cellphone, No Wallet, No ID... nothing but the clothes you were in.

simply because your parents have everything taken care of.

wow, those were the days

It just occurred to me that it hasn't been like that for close to a decade

Time does fly!

I re-lived the past a few days ago with self-built gingerbread.. *cough* graham crackers *cough*  houses. Nevertheless.. it was a delectable and nostalgic trip back to my youth. NOM.  A little army of gummy bears barricading the entrance ever so tentatively. They were the most delicious.. I had to eat them first.

Why my fingers smell like orange chicken sauce.

Jukebox: Medina- You and I

“GINA HELP HELP...” I jolt up in bed. 630AM the sky was still a sluggish gray, my mind in disarray, scramble of thoughts, brain still lingering in my dreams, resisting reality.  The bed beckons me... "lie back down" no.. "focus focus"... "why am I up so early". oh, mother's holiday potluck. holiday party food. Food. FOOD.

"I can't finish this in 20 min, gina come help me"

Next thing I knew, the icy kitchen floor was draining away heat from my bare feet.  In a hopeless battle against the dissipating body heat, my fingers ran lame attempts at energy generation as I ferociously ripped the prepackaged bags.

Delicate magical pouches of sauce, ready to be emancipated and cast their spells.  Beguiling bits of peanuts and ginger danced amidst the goopy fluid.  "I WAS HOMEMADE" it screams,  hahha homemade my @$$!

"thank goodness we got the ready-to-eat chinese salad set." mom says as she rushes to the rice cooker "one less thing to worry about"

costco still amazes me after all these years. (L <3 V  E)

before me, a clear bowl as deep as my bathroom sink, wide enough to be my winter sled, glistening water droplets already joining in on the sport, sliding down the concave surface into the empty abyss
The emptiness invites food.

Wish granted! In goes 3 pounds of Dole Iceberg lettuce like a garbage dump

Did you know there is taste and texture scale on the bag? a two for taste and texture a "crunchy bold" five. That always reminds me of the cheeto bag, where the scale meets "dangerously cheesy",  I remember pondering over the scale when I was younger. Did any of you wonder too?

I digress.

in go the almonds. in go the crunchy wontons. MIX MIX MIX. Chicken. MIX MIX MIX MIX CHEX MIX!

the oven timer dings precisely as I finish my organic masterpiece.

I peek in the aluminum tray… befuddled by the pallid color of the chicken. my index finger meets the surface. COLD.

“MOM THE ORANGE CHICKEN IS NOT COOKED.”

a 10 second jumble as feet storm in.

"what do you mean it’s not... omg... the conventional oven wasn't plugged"
sure enough, the lone plug smirks at me.  black and silver "You Were Careless", it laughs

8 min left.

I turn on the stove and start the stirfry instead.

the sound of oil snapping comforts me despite the impending deadline. I was working the stove like a skilled panda express worker. Yayuhh!

soon, everything is ready. cellophane and aluminum glistening their sanitary aura.

I load everything carefully in the trunk, and mom speeds off to work.

Undulating waves of success wash over me! Yay! I did well this morning... and it's still only 700! Time to do my own schtuff.... I thinkk?

As I round the corner to go to my room, I pass by the kitchen...

...and the merciless battlefield of unwashed pans, open sauces, and unused foods glares right back at me.

sigh.... i guess not yet.

Happy Holidays :)
